Red, White and Blues

Feeling blue since the announcement of the Topeka Blues Society Spirit of Kansas Blues Festival cancellation? Luckily there are alternatives.

Topeka Blues Society presents a free, annual concert (this would be year 11) that showcases some of the biggest names in the blues industry. The event was canceled due to the pandemic we’ve been living in since March. However, a smaller outdoor blues concert has been organized at The Vinewood, with Topeka Blues Society blessings.

The Vinewood, located at 2848 SE 29th St sits on 5.1 acres just north of Lake Shawnee. Their entrances is shared with the renowned Shack, known for their burgers (we suggest the philly, however) and has been a backdrop for community events, dances, concerts, wedding and more since 1889. This July 4 the blues sing true with an outdoor concert hosted by The Vinewood. Featuring Mahan Band, Velvet Blues Revue and Mark + The Sharks, the event provides a much-needed escape and celebration. Doors open at 4p with music beginning at 5p.

The Spirit of Kansas July 4th celebration at Lake Shawnee will continue a few traditions, including their 24th year community fireworks display. The fireworks will be an all aerial display this year, no ground-based fireworks like in the past, launched from the dock on Lake Shawnee. This eliminates the need for viewers to crowd close to hte shorelines of the lake to see the ground-based display and offers an opportunity for guests at The Vinewood to enjoy the show. A small, private firework display will take play on The Vinewood grounds around 9:30p, leading up to the community show at 10p. (Those not in attendance may view the fireworks display via live stream on WIBW.com and listen to the patriotic soundtrack on Majic 107.7).

Additionally, the annual car show will take place at Lake Shawnee beginning at 8:30a, located at Shelters 4 and 5 in Tinman Circle.

No shuttle buses will run from Rueger Softball Complex to Lake Shawnee this year, so it’s important to get to the event(s) early and also be apprised of traffic route plans.

Getting to The Vinewood: Music begins at 5p, doors open at 4p. You will be able to get to The Vinewood via 29th Street from the east or the west. Beginning at 10p, the exit plan closes off 29th St. in front of The Vinewood to passing traffic, allowing our guests to exit either east or west and join Lake Shawnee exit traffic. However, we have planned for music to go til 11p, eliminating the need for bottleneck upon exit.
