Celebrate Regional Pop Culture Creatives

Attention Poets

FB event SG Our Stories v22
P atrons of pop culture will congregate this weekend at The Great Overland Comic Con, an all ages event which celebrates regional pop culture creatives.

Special guests include:

Greg Peters: a character designer with 30 years of experience in the industry. He has worked with Hanna-Barbera, SEGA, Warner Brothers, and Walt Disney Animation. He has designed characters for notable shows like Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain, and Rugrats.

Bona Bones: an animator with extensive experience in commercial, feature, stop motion and television animation. She also has worked as a production designer, puppet fabricator, seamstress, and set fabricator. A notable show she has served as animator for is Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken.

Chris Grine: Eisner nominated author/illustrator and creator of Netflix’s ChickenHare, he is also the illustrator for Scholastic Books’ Animorphs series.

Cosplayers rejoice as nationally award winners Pros and Cons Cosplay and DagoBen Builds will also be in attendance. The Star Wars 501st group will be showing off costumes as well as other cosplay guests. There will be a cosplay photoshoot each day of the event, so come dressed as your favorite pop culture character.

Competition heats up as Potato Place Gaming hosts an Ultimate Smash Brothers video game tournament on Saturday and returns Sunday with Mario Kart 8. Registration is done on site during the convention and prizes will be awarded for the top three place winners.

Might you be in the market for crocheted wizard hats, cosplay supplies, crafts, dice, fantasy swords, retro video games, toys, and other wonder one of a kind items? If so, this weekend is your shopping utopia as you will find these items plus a great selection of comics.

Finally, local and regional comic creators populate the Artist Alley. The creators will have their own comics and artwork available for purchase and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the comics’ industry. Discussion panels sponsored by Humanities Kansas feature these creators with key topics focused on representation and identification in comics, history and other topics of how comics impact [your] life.

This is my second year as a Great Overland Comic Con featured artist and I can personally attest The Great Overland Comic Con is truly an outstanding addition to the entertainment offerings of Topeka. I enjoy not only meeting and visiting with everyone who stopped by Artist’s Alley table but also meeting other regional artists and creators.  Many aspects of pop culture are represented in this convention, giving great entertainment value as well as offering educational opportunities and a safe space to celebrate your fandom.
